City Motel aka Jolly Roger

City Motel – aka Jolly Roger Nightclub – in King Street.

Now demolished for residential high-rise. As are most of the buildings in these Street Art galleries.

What a venue – you never felt judged or out of place at the Jolly Roger. In the words of the immortal Victor, the JR’s infamous manager, the venue was Newcastle’s number bloody one nightspot.

Throsby explained in the politest terms that he was gathering images of a dying city, both street art (graffiti) and derelict buildings, all of which had a story to tell. Whereupon the resident softened his demeanour and offered to show Throsby around and through the sad former motel, with the introductory exclamation: "Welcome to the Hanoi Hilton!" And in we went.
